The Derek Grippo Project performs classic songs in a jazz and bebop style. Vocalist Derek Grippo, accompanied by locally known guitarist Dr. Gary Grippo and bassist Preston Murphy, will perform songs such as Route 66, Georgia On My Mind and Tracy Chapman’s rocking Give Me One Reason and Aretha Franklin’s soul anthem Think.

Artist Bio

This four-person combo features vocalist Derek Grippo, a New Haven resident with a unique style ranging from low baritone to tenor. Accompanied by bass, drums and Gary Grippo on guitar, Derek Grippo performs its own unique renditions of jazz, R&B, soul pop and rock, with an emphasis on bebop.

Artist Bio

With a capacity for writing as well as covering great songs, Suzanne is a singer, songwriter and guitarist well known for her tribute performances of music by Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Carole King, Carly Simon, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and James Taylor. She’s released an album of Mitchell and Cohen covers and a collection of 20 of her own songs. A former advertising jingle singer whose work for Pepsi won a Clio award and who wrote music for The Electric Company and was a runner-up in the gospel category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, she’s also a tireless advocate for marriage equality.

Seat of Our Pants plays at the forefront of the Connecticut roots music scene with heartfelt, humorous songs and unique instrumentation. The distinctively all-American tone of the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, the visual intrigue and rhythmic thump of the electric upright bass, the energetic beat of the cajon, the melodic play of fiddle and guitar, plus impeccable intricate vocal harmonies distinguish this one-of-a-kind Connecticut ensemble.

The Hagner-McKay Nonet covers the breadth of modern jazz with imaginative soundscapes and high-intensity swing. Enjoy modern jazz and new music in a performance of original compositions and reimagined American songbook classics and art songs. Creative ensemble passages combine with powerful solos to generate an intense listening experience.

Artist Bio

With alto, tenor and baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, drums, piano and bass, the Hagner-McKay Nonet performs modern jazz and new music influenced by the likes of Jim McNeely, Darcy James Argue, Maria Schneider and Warne Marsh. The band is co-led by saxophonist-composers Skyler Hagner, a Guilford native and adjunct professor at the University of New Haven; and Hunter McKay. Hagner has performed with Michael Feinstein, Lil’ Kim, Bobby Rydell and others. McKay has performed with Godsmack’s Sully Erna and America’s Got Talent winner Eugene Murphy Jr.; his compositions have been described as “the music that will soundtrack the future.”

Noah Baerman and Friends, a six-piece ensemble featuring piano, trumpet, alto saxophone, euphonium, bass and drums, will debut a jazz composition commissioned in part by the Guilford Performing Arts Festival. The piece, called Cliff Palace, is part of a larger body of work dedicated to former band member Claire Randall, who was murdered at the age of 26 in a domestic incident.

Artist Bio

Noah Baerman is a pianist, composer and educator who has spent much of his recent career composing and performing “message music,” exploring themes of social justice and community engagement, disability (he has an incurable connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) and the American foster care crisis (he’s a foster parent). Noah has released 10 CDs and published 10 instructional books and was a 2008 recipient of a New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation. He was the recipient in the music category of the Guilford Performing Arts Festival’s inaugural Artists’ Award. His festival band is an extraordinary collection of musicians: Nadje Noordhuis on trumpet, Kris Allen on alto sax, Kate Ten Eyck on euphonium, Henry Lugo on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums.

Singer-songwriter Laura Clapp will bring her passionate, folksy rock to the stage, telling true stories in song form.

Artist Bio

Laura Clapp’s career has taken her from Berkeley College of Music to demo sessions in Nashville, to singing backup for ’80s legend Howard Jones to demonstrating products for music equipment manufacturers. She lives in Guilford and is working on her fourth album as well as her latest labor of love: songwriting workshops. A brash, honest and happy New Englander, she’s an artist who’s not afraid to tell it like it is and who thrives on love, excitement and a passion for life.

Featuring Guilford’s own Jilian Grey and Ric Haddad, Cherry Pie Band is a delicious, freshly baked musical dance party with just enough retro sprinkled on top for a sweet-stepping good time! Grey and Haddad have been performing together for more than 20 years. Together with Michael Frishman from the Shiny Lapel Trio and Mike Savino on guitar, they are frequent and favorite performers at venues across the Shoreline.

Artist Bio

This Shoreline trio never lived up to its original name, One and Done, and has moved on from rock and pop covers to writing, recording and performing original music. The band—keyboardist Bill Cox, drummer Dan Coca and guitarist-singer Courtney Seely—released its first EP, Where to Fit, in August.

Guitarist Steve Shelton performs solo and in regional groups such as The Muddy Rudders, The Racket Downstairs, Shoreline Jazz Big Band and Tuxedo Junction Big Band. He’s dedicated to educating listeners about the full potential of the six-string guitar and enjoys speaking about the history behind the music he plays, especially the unique and guitar-heavy world of Latin jazz. He’ll be joined this afternoon by singer Caroline Shelton, who was involved in Guilford High School Theatre Arts and was a theater director at the Neighborhood Music School, and bassist Mark Rabuffo, a metalhead at heart who plays with the Muddy Rudders and The Racket Downstairs.

Youth XL is a kooky, garage-pop band from New Haven. Formed in 2018 as an evolution of frontman Alex McGuire’s live act, it writes and performs tunes characterized by crunchy guitars, sweet harmonies and charmingly irreverent lyrics about breakups, acid reflux and flirtatious nomads.

Artist Bio

Tenor and musical director Thomas Heilman, a specialist in vocal music before 1650, has recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Harwood Early Music Ensemble, and given concerts at the Detroit Museum of Art, the Newberry Library and Amherst Early Music Festival. The ensemble for this performance comprises Heilman, soprano Danielle Munsell Howard and theorbist Hideki Yamaya.

Behind frontman-electric uke player-singer John Liebler are Jack Liebler on bass, Steve Shelton on guitar, Justin Paglino on keys, Pete Magnotti on drums and Sarah Prown on mandolin, bouzouki, sax and everything else under the sun. They’re a little zany—finding inspiration in everything from Canadian traffic signals, to fresh fruit and the existence of God.
