The Afro Bop Alliance Sextet, a subset of the Latin Grammy-winning Afro Bop Alliance Big Band, will play an evening of Latin-inflected jazz music, riding Afro-Cuban rhythms, a driving horn section and the exquisite drumming of bandleader Joe McCarthy. Artist Bio

Latin Grammy Award-winning Afro Bop Alliance is an Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble based in New York. It received Latin Jazz Album of the Year at the 9th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2008 for the recording “Afro Bop Alliance, featuring Dave Samuels,” which was released on the Heads-Up label. The recording was also nominated for a Grammy in the same category that same year. The band was founded and is led by drummer Joe McCarthy, who lives in Madison, Connecticut. The band is comprised of first call jazz and Latin jazz players from New York and New England.

Afro Bop’s music has long been inspired by the great be-bop tradition, married to the rich rhythmic stylings of Afro-Caribbean music and is composed by the members of the band and arranged by Vince Norman. Afro Bop Alliance has been featured at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, The Silver Spring Jazz Festival, The Provincetown Jazz Festival, The WC Handy Jazz Festival, Blues Alley, Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Rams Head On Stage with Paquito D’ Rivera, The Jazz Educators Network International Convention, The Percussive Arts Society International Convention, The University of Florida, Georgetown University, George Mason University, University of Maryland, West Chester University, Rowan University and The Smithsonian’s Jazz Appreciation Series, among many others.

This Massachusetts-based acoustic trio has a lively, original sound wrought from diverse musical influences ranging from Americana roots, singer-songwriter and folk to rock, blues and classical. Flat-picking guitar, expressive violin and stand-up bass combine for an energetic swing on songs with rich emotional content that speak to people’s everyday lives, historical events, and relationships.

Artist Bio

Wild Maple’s lively sound is woven from a rich variety of musical influences, including Americana/Roots, singer-songwriter, blues, folk, rock and classical. Their repertoire is a blend of originals, traditional/folk songs and covers of obscure singer-songwriter material performed on acoustic string instruments accompanied by gorgeous vocal harmonies. This trio from north of Boston has a growing fan base throughout New England and has been performing for 10 years in coffeehouses, music festivals, street fairs and restaurants.

Natya Mandala performs one of the oldest forms of traditional Indian classical dance, known as Bharatanatyam. Its features intricate footwork, complex rhythms, and depictions of mythological stories and emotions that can transport the dancer and the viewer to temples and spiritual places far beyond their surroundings.

Artist Bio

Natya Mandala is an Indian classical dance awareness group that promotes traditional Indian dance forms through performance, shows, workshops and other events. Based on one of the oldest forms of Indian classical dance, known as Bharatanatyam, its pieces range from purely abstract and rhythmic to devotional to dramatic to modern, with depictions of the divine in various forms. The troupe, led by dancer Smita Krishnaswami, is largely drawn from students, faculty, lab technicians and others at the Yale School of Medicine.

Original instrumental music rooted in 1970s progressive rock, classic rock, funk and jazz with a timeless jam-band vibe. 

Artist Bio

Submarine is a four-piece instrumental rock band whose sound has been compared to a mix of Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa and Santana. With guitars (Jeff Zudek), bass (Ted Ervin), keyboards (David Golden), drums (Glenn Webb) and electronic sampling, the band moves from progressive and classic rock to funk and jazz. Former members of the Yes tribute band Fragile, the Allman Brothers tribute band Brothers of the Road, Electric Mayhem, In Step, Cinnamon Sky and the U.S. Army Band, they bring diverse influences to the project.

Dingonek Street Band is a Brooklyn-based brass band dedicated to human culture and sonic adventure, drawing from the celebratory energy and spontaneity of the second-line brass tradition. The sextet features Bobby Spellman on trumpet and slide trumpet; Emily Pecoraro (from Guilford) on soprano sax, Greg Blair on tenor sax, Tyler Burchfield on baritone sax, Josiah Reibstein on tuba and Marco Frey on drums.

The Spot, Guilford Acrobatics & Co., is a training center in Guilford that teaches acrobatics, gymnastics, stunting, hip hop dance and more. Owner Danielle Scarpellino is a former competitive acrobat, cheerleading captain and coach, professional dancer and actress. Through the art of acrobatics, she inspires and encourages children of all ages and abilities.

Moss-covered stepping stones, heathered fields and the Harvest Moon are all evoked when River Run steps on stage. Their sound, rooted in melancholic storytelling, wanders among folk, Americana and Celtic traditions. It’s a Wallace family affair, featuring sisters Sam (lead vocals) and Kat (vocals and fiddle) and dad Bill on guitar. The trio began writing songs together as an extension of conversations they were having at the dinner table, and the result is a sweet musical experience featuring original tunes, great musicianship and soaring sibling harmony.

Watch, experience and taste this bread-making demonstration and conversation, while Smith bakes over an open fire and onlookers eat the results fresh from the flame. Conversations about bread and its place in history and culture extend the performance beyond the palette.

Artist Bio

Lexie Smith is a New York-based baker, writer and artist who utilizes bread as a way to explore culture and society. Smith believes bread is essential to a large slice of human experience, and that there is nothing more telling than the way people engage—or don’t engage—with bread. Her publishing platform, Bread on Earth, is a “bread web,” built to support the diverse dialogues that stem from our relationship to grain. Smith recently collaborated on Landing Pages, a two-month literary performance project in a defunct Hudson News at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. She was named to the 2019 list of Forty under Forty by the New York Food Policy Center. Her writings and recipes have appeared in many online and print publications, and she has exhibited in galleries and conducted residencies around the world.

Be the music in this all-ages workshop/class/celebration of rhythm, drumming and improvisation led by Peter Hawes, percussionist/teacher and team-building facilitator. We’ll use voice, body percussion, movement, drums and other instruments to make a joyous, heartfelt and synchronous racket on the Guilford Green—while learning about the rhythmic traditions and music of West Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and elsewhere. Instruments provided; bring your own if you’d like. Drums and percussion instruments provided, or bring your own.

Artist Bio

Peter has studied West and North African, Middle Eastern, Japanese and central Asian drumming, as well as music improvisation, and is a certified Music for People teacher of improvisation as a mode of self-expression, creativity, communication and collaboration. A former member of Framework Percussion Ensemble, he’s led community drumming circles throughout the Northeast and facilitated drumming- and improvisation-based team-building programs for USAA Financial Services, Silicon Graphics, Oppenheimer Funds and the American Society for Training and Development. He’s taught at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, Rowe Camp and Conference Center, and Norwalk Community College.

Artist Bio

The Guilford Town Band is directed by Mark Gahm, director of the concert band and wind ensemble at Guilford High School. Musicians, many of whom perform professionally, come from Guilford and surrounding towns. Founded in 2002, the band performs at Guilford’s annual summer picnic and gives a winter concert at Guilford High School every year.

Keely Baisden Knudsen, artistic director of Legacy Theatre, created Wheel Life Theatre Troupe to provide an acting outlet for people who ambulate with crutches or use wheelchairs, and their family members. For more than 20 years, the 17-piece String of Pearls Big Band has performed a wide repertoire of jazz standards, early rock ’n’ roll and dance tunes featuring the cha cha, waltz, Tango and swing. Musical director Dick Campo toured with Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra and played with Sammy Kaye and Vaughan Monroe. The band plays extensively along the Shoreline.

Tuxedo Junction is an 18-piece, Shoreline-based swing band with a full brass section, bass, drums, piano, guitar and and vocals. Formed in 1989 by Pete Jacobs as a Dixieland band, it’s now run by Patricia Todd. It’s been a staple at Bill’s Seafood Restaurant in Westbrook for 21 years and performs often in New Haven, Wallingford, Avon, and at the Guilford Rotary’s LobsterFest.

The Nu Haven Kapelye is a group of area musicians who have been playing Klezmer and Yiddish music for so long—20 years—that some of the musicians weren’t even born when the band started! The Kapelye explores the traditional and the innovative in Klezmer, putting on an exciting show born of the musicians’ energy; their diversity of age, gender, experience and background; and all-in commitment. The band released its first CD, What’s Nu, in 2016. Come join the freylekh (fun)!!!

Three dance companies—Eastern Connecticut Ballet, Shoreline Ballet and Starship Dance—combine to present a showcase of each company’s latest repertoire.

Eastern Connecticut Ballet (ECB) has been one of Connecticut’s premier dance schools since 1992. Offering a curriculum that includes ballet, pointe, modern, character and jazz for students of all ages, ECB provides high-caliber training that challenges students to reach their full potential. Executive Director Lise Reardon and Artistic Director Gloria Govrin offer professional, New York City-level instruction to aspiring dancers and bring joy to thousands every year with live performances.

Shoreline Ballet provides students with the highest quality dance education and an environment where every student is valued and respected. It offers training in classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance, musical theatre and tap, and adult barre fitness. Director Kathryn Contessa danced professionally with the Cincinnati Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, Amaranth Contemporary Dance Company, Peter Sparling Dance Company and Jacobs Campbell Dance.

Starship Dance Studio offers superior technical dance training in an atmosphere that fosters creativity, motivation and a positive self-image. Its dance company comprises students as well as professionals and performs original children’s ballets in schools and other venues throughout the Shoreline. Artistic Director Joyce DiLauro studied at The American Ballet Theatre School, The American Ballet Center and Luigi’s Broadway Jazz Center. She has also studied modern dance, African dance and belly dancing, and is a certified Yoga teacher.

Blues-infused Americana duo Living With Robots (Sandy Connelly and Ted Ervin) will perform family-friendly and deep cover-track songs, connecting to the audience with humor and energy. Sandy and Ted are busy local musicians and teachers, as well as dedicated promoters of the local music scene.

Artist Bio

Ted’s jam-band bent and Sandy’s pop/rock/blues style reflect the influences of songwriters like The Wood Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits. Sandy, originally trained as an opera singer, found her calling as a blues and rock n’ roll singer and guitarist. She plays with many Shoreline musicians, and performs as one of the three divas with Washboard Slim & The Bluelights Roots Diva Show. Ted sits in with many Connecticut-based groups, such as Take Two & Call Me in the Morning, The Repeat Offenders and another festival act, Submarine.
