Watch, experience and taste this bread-making demonstration and conversation, while Smith bakes over an open fire and onlookers eat the results fresh from the flame. Conversations about bread and its place in history and culture extend the performance beyond the palette.
Lexie Smith is a New York-based baker, writer and artist who utilizes bread as a way to explore culture and society. Smith believes bread is essential to a large slice of human experience, and that there is nothing more telling than the way people engage—or don’t engage—with bread. Her publishing platform, Bread on Earth, is a “bread web,” built to support the diverse dialogues that stem from our relationship to grain. Smith recently collaborated on Landing Pages, a two-month literary performance project in a defunct Hudson News at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. She was named to the 2019 list of Forty under Forty by the New York Food Policy Center. Her writings and recipes have appeared in many online and print publications, and she has exhibited in galleries and conducted residencies around the world.
