The Hagner-McKay Nonet covers the breadth of modern jazz with imaginative soundscapes and high-intensity swing. Enjoy modern jazz and new music in a performance of original compositions and reimagined American songbook classics and art songs. Creative ensemble passages combine with powerful solos to generate an intense listening experience.
With alto, tenor and baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, drums, piano and bass, the Hagner-McKay Nonet performs modern jazz and new music influenced by the likes of Jim McNeely, Darcy James Argue, Maria Schneider and Warne Marsh. The band is co-led by saxophonist-composers Skyler Hagner, a Guilford native and adjunct professor at the University of New Haven; and Hunter McKay. Hagner has performed with Michael Feinstein, Lil’ Kim, Bobby Rydell and others. McKay has performed with Godsmack’s Sully Erna and America’s Got Talent winner Eugene Murphy Jr.; his compositions have been described as “the music that will soundtrack the future.”
